Baby Fence Lizards’ First Food
These Western Fence lizards just came out of the incubator on July 14. This is them first experiencing actual food. You can already tell these guys are starting to have different personalities.
The hatchlings are around 2″ long and will grow to be about 5″ long. This is including the tail. Babies should be kept in a large Kritter Keeper/Faunarium/Etc (The names are different, but the product is the same), with sheets of paper towel for their ground. Since they live in a rocky enviroment, natural rocks are perfect. Just be sure to clean them thoroughly. You will also need to get a hide for them. A simple cave from Petco or something will suffice. Heating is also necessary. For the babies in the Kritter Keeper, a simple run-of-the-mill human heating pad under the vivarium will do fine. But as they mature and you place them in an adult terrarium, you should get a reptile under-tank heat mat.
But what is most important of all is that you need to get a UVB light. All diurnal lizards need a source of UVB or they will die. Putting the tank by a windowsill is no substitute; UVB cannot enter through materials such as glass or plastic. So go to your pet store and get a Desert 50 10.0 fluorescent UVB tube. They will also need a fixture to put the bulb in, naturally. Keep in mind: UVB bulbs begin to slowly wear out after 6 months.
In addition to UVB, they will need a source of radiant heat as well as a supplementing amount of UVA. A Light & Heat bulb for reptiles will do. I use an Exo-Terra Day Glo bulb for the light & heat. (Attention: This is not necessary for baby lizards, as it can take up too much space at the top of the kritter keeper, plus they have all the heat they need)
These fence lizards are being raised on dusted pinhead crickets. Emphasis on dusted, as pinhead crickets alone will not provide much nutrition. I use the Miner-All reptile vitamin powder. Simply put the pinhead crickets in a small container, sprinkle a dash of the vitamin powder in there, and then shake up the container. For baby lizards’ food, the pinheads should always be dusted. As they get older the dusting should be more occasional, as well as making the crickets larger. You can eventually feed them a waxworm from time to time, or when they get big enough (preferably adult), a baby dubia roach.
All of these items can be obtained from a Petco, Petsmart, or a local reptile store.
As your baby fence lizard gets older and larger, you will need to move him into a glass terrarium with a minimum size of 10 gallons. The substrate should be about 1.5 inches of Eco-Earth and should be decorated with a basking platform, rocks, miscellaneous decor to help aid with habitat recognition, and a water bowl, in addition to their hide. The water bowl should be just large enough to submerge themselves in. Do not use tap water or anything that might have harmful chemicals in it.
If you want, now would be a good time to socialize your fence lizard. Simple hand-feeding should begin first to supplement your lizards’ placidity. Afterwards, simply try gently stroking the back of him/her. After they are used to you doing that, you can try picking them up, but keeping them inside the terrarium. Make sure that it is not possible for them to escape during handling; they can hide under dressers, beds, cabinets, slip through doors, and worst-case scenario, an air vent if there is one at the floor. Socializing inside an enclosed room such as a bathroom can work.
