Lisa and Buddy Valastro, stars of The Cake Boss on TLC, and owners of Carlo’s Bakery, contacted me to help them design a nursery for their fourth baby due in February. They did not want to know the gender of their baby prior to birth, and therefore desired a gender-neutral baby nursery. The problem was, Lisa wanted a traditional elegant nursery, while Buddy wanted a whimsical Jungle Safari themed nursery. My job was to find a compromise! Of course the consultations were scheduled and due to Buddy’s busy schedule at Carlo’s Bakery, the initial meetings were with Lisa. We selected elegant traditional nursery furniture in a beautiful antique silver finish which included a stunning iron crib. Silk dupioni was used in the custom crib bedding and window treatments and other elegant custom fixtures such as the pendant nursery light and nursery glider were selected as well. I was a bit concerned about Buddy ending up dissatisfied with the nursery’s lack of jungle and safari elements, therefore I convinced Lisa to allow us to paint a stylized tree in the nursery’s corner to give Buddy a bit of jungle atmosphere. I also shared with her my own Giraffe Family wall hanging and promised her that if we put this in the nursery, along with the rocking giraffe and other stuffed animals, that it would appease Buddy’s desire to have animals in the nursery.

I also wanted to be sure that the Valastros’ older children felt important to their new baby brother or sister. I asked Lisa to provide me with favorite baby photos of her three children, Sofia, Buddy and Marco. I blew up their size and cropped them to a 6″ square and changed them to sepia tones. I purchased three 12″ square scrapbook frames at Michael’s Craft Store that were a dark brown and spray painted them antique silver to match the silver nursery furniture. It involved alternating layers of gold and silver to get them just right. Then, with permission from the scrapbook paper manufacturer and artist, I used scrapbook paper as a matting to the photos and ended up with sweet custom photos. I believe it’s very important when there are older siblings, to make sure they feel important to the new baby. By bringing in their baby photos, we’ve honored these children as well as provided the new baby with sweet, familiar baby faces to enjoy while mom or dad is changing diapers. Babies do love to stare at other baby faces!

Since there was not an existing shelf to coordinate with the beautiful antique silver furniture so I decided to paint a shelf to match. I sanded it down, primed it, and again layered gold and silver spray paint to get it just right! I also try to bring a sense of nostalgia into each of my nurseries by incorporating items from the parents’ own childhood. I asked Lisa’s mother, Gloria to help me surprise Lisa with some items from her own childhood to place on the shelf and to hang from the pegs. Gloria went home and brought back Lisa’s own christening gown and shoes, as well as a sweet photo of her as a toddler. Perfect!

I wanted to further surprise the family by adding special designer touches like the green Sweet Dreams ceiling medallion, the custom tile and the beautiful memory box, as well as the custom topiary letter that I painted myself. Since we were completing a gender-neutral nursery, we used the family’s monogram on personalized items so that it would be right at home in this nursery, no matter the baby’s name or gender.

While hard surface floors such as hardwoods, bamboo or cork are best in nurseries to help prevent allergies and asthma, we still wanted a soft, warm and hypoallergenic area rug to walk and play upon. Wool is hypoallergenic and all natural, meaning no off-gasses from the manufacturing process. This is the best choice in rugs for children’s rooms whenever possible.

The nursery mural was completed by Juan and Ralph, talented artists from Carlo’s Bakery. It was quite entertaining to work with this team, to say the least. When all was said and done, Buddy and Lisa loved their baby’s nursery. The looks on their faces when they saw it all come together…priceless! The icing on the cake…Lisa loved her nursery so much, that Buddy surprised her with a replica of the entire nursery made out of cake for her baby shower! Who else can say their nursery design was “immortalized in cake” by The Cake Boss, himself?! I do love my job.

A house? I thought about it, and he was right. There was no room here for the triplets.
“I guess your right” I finally said.
“So I’m not working Monday, do you want to go house shopping?” Taylor asked.
“Yeah that be great” Taylor reached over and turned off the light and pulled the covers underneath us.
*House Hunting*
I was starting to get discourage, because we looked at 10 different houses, and we didn’t like any of them. This was the last house of the day. When we pulled up, it was pretty big. It had a nice yard so the kids could play, and it was in our budget. (0:16) The owners weren’t moving till the 28th of December. So a little over a month. Taylor helped me out of the car, and led me inside. It as even bigger inside then the outside. The real estate agent walked us around. It had decent size rooms, one nice master bedroom, A kitchen that had lots of space, an a huge living room. When we were done, we left, and talked about it. We decided to get it. It had everything that we wanted. Black Friday was just the other day, and me and Taylor were able to get 3 cribs, 3 swings, and A LOT of diapers. When we got home, Me and Taylor talked over with his parents. They said ok to it. Then Taylor went and handled the money, while I gave my feet a rest. Later, I went upstairs took a shower, and waited in bed for Taylor. When I was half a sleep I felt Taylor put his arms around me.
“Do you want to finish the rest of the baby shopping tomorrow?” Taylor asked me.
“Sure”
We got up early that morning since we had a lot to do. Me and Taylor went out for breakfast, then headed for Baby R Us.
*Almost done shopping*
Me and Taylor found lots of things. I was glad when it was over. We spent about 4 ½ hours there. We got most of the clothes, all the bedding for the cribs, changing tables, rocking chairs, night stands, lamps etc.
We got everything in Taylor’s car, and went back in the store to make sure that we got everything. But when I walked in, I could not believe who I saw.
“Well would you look what the wind blew in” said Logan.
“What the are you doing here?” I said.
“Hey, I got everything in the-” Then Taylor saw Logan “Logan, do us all a favor, and go a tree” Then Lilly walked up.
“Logan, what do you think about this” She held up a blanket with zebra print on it, that said ‘Daddy’s little Princess’. Then she turned to me. She looked at me in discus
“Were having a girl. Were going name her Cecelia Cameron” She said, like as if her name choice was better then mine.
“well I hope that you know that Cecelia means blind, and Cameron means bent nose.” I said. She just rolled her eyes. She probably didn’t have anything better to say.
“Lilly, Why don’t you go to the cribs, and I’ll there in a second” Logan said to her. She walked away, and Logan’s attention was on me and Taylor.
“Savannah, I can’t believe that you would lie” He started to walk closer to us. Taylor stood in front of me, pretty much covering my tummy. I thought that it was so sweet how he was already protecting his babies.
“What the are you talking about?” I said.
“Savannah, I just can’t believe that you would lie to Taylor…” He looked straight at Taylor. “Those kids, are mine. I am their father” Logan said.
“You dick! These kids are not yours! I never had sex with you! get the out of my life!” I tried to get away from Taylor’s grip to give him a good ass-kicking, but Taylor wouldn’t let me go. Instead we just turned around and started walking to the door, but I just couldn’t help my self. As we were walking I said “Hope you have the ugliest, fuck-up kid!” and gave him both my middle fingers.
“Savannah…” Taylor said in disappointment. We got in the car, and it was a silent drive. We went to Lowe’s to get some paint for their rooms. Baby blue for Aiden, Lavender for Elena, and Pink & White for Coralie. I could tell that something was up with Taylor. I think that he was mad about what I said to Logan. Once again, it was a silent drive back to his house. We ate dinner in silence. I had to ask him what was wrong.
“Taylor, why are you so quite?” I asked him.
“I don’t know… I just am thinking about what Logan said….” Taylor said. Was he about to believe him?
“Are you telling me that you think that your not the father of these kids?” I said.
“Just tell me Savannah, are they, or are they not?” Now that totally me off.
“Taylor, How can you believe the guy that has lied, and hurt me?!?!” I started to yell.
“I guess that I am” He said.

When should you move your child from a crib to a toddler bed? There really is no right time. It will all depend on your child.

Most parents switch their baby from a crib to a toddler bed between the ages of 1 ½ and 3 years. It is best to keep them in their crib as long as he or she fits comfortably in it.

One of the reasons you may rush to buy a toddler bed is because you worry your baby will start climbing in and out of their crib, risking injury. Before you do this, please be sure that your toddler is ready to make the transition. A toddler bed provides some freedom for your child, as he/she will no longer need help getting in and out of bed. It may not be safe for your toddler to be walking around the house when everyone is still sleeping, so please be sure they are ready for this freedom, or perhaps put up a safety gate limiting access to other rooms.

If you need to move your toddler from a crib to a toddler bed because a new baby is coming, try to move your toddler six to eight weeks prior to the new baby coming home. You do not want your child to feel their crib, or room, is being taken away by the new baby. But if your toddler is not ready to make the move, don’t rush them. Leave them in the crib. Your newborn can sleep in a cradle, or bassinet, until your toddler is ready to make the move.

To make the transition easier for your toddler you should try to keep the toddler bed in the same room as the crib and make the change fun. You can have a big boy/big girl moving-from-crib
-to-toddler-bed party. If there is an older sibling you can say “WOW, you are moving into Bobby’s big bed.”

You may want to have your toddler help you choose the bedding that you will be using as this will make them feel safe and not afraid to make the move.

Finally, if your toddler is walking around at night, crying, or cannot fall asleep, he or she may not be ready to move to a toddler bed. So please wait a few weeks and try again.
