“Masai Village visit
During our amazing stay at Olonana Camp we also had the opportunity to visit a local Masai village. We were intrigued by the Masai people who stand out in their characteristic red wraps as they herd their cows amongst the wild animals of the vast Masai Mara. We had seen so many villages as we had flown into the Mara.
The Masai have mostly resisted the influence of Western civilisation, however, on one occasion we did think we saw one of them on a mobile!!!. Nonetheless we were keen to understand their story and indulge ourselves a little in their way of life.
We were met by ‘Benson’ at our camp who was friendly and spoke good ‘tribal’ English. He was educated and was an ‘Elder’ of the Masai aged 37.
Benson immediately put us at ease and brought two bows and arrows for the boys to use during our visit. He explained that true Masai must be trained as warriors in case of threat and for protection. He tested the boys to see if they could fire an arrow — they could. As we walked to the village along the dusty trail the boys took turns firing their arrows to impress our cultural friend (and us). Benson told us many stories and we asked many questions — did they still drink their cow’s blood with milk? Yes he replied.
Apparently ‘Masai’ means — ‘People’ who speak ‘Ma’ – which is their language. They also have learnt Swahili as this is most commonly spoken by the locals of Kenya. There are around 1m Masai people or around 2% of population and they are just one of the 42 tribes of Kenya.
As we approached the village more people appeared. They were friendly and waved. Benson explained they welcome tourists as they see this brings benefits. They believe those who visit the village are genuinely interested and the village benefit from the entrance fee plus any product they may be able to sell us before we leave.
Everyone looked very healthy and happy
This village is set in a few acres with 8 foot high thicket grown fence with small entrance — once again we were told this is to ensure their cattle which are kept inside the village remain safe from wild predators. We ducked under the small opening to enter the village and the ‘mud’ houses were built around the inside the of the thicket fence all the way round. These ‘mud’ huts have three small rooms and on entering smelt of the fire — in fact the inside of the roof was black from fire soot. There were hard floors and no bedding. We asked the boys how they would like to live in a house like these. You can imagine they were loud with their protestations.
We were taken into the communal ‘room’. Built with sticks and about 20 feet in diameter with seating all the way round. Benson continued his talk and also beckoned another Masai to join us. We were about to be shown how they make fire…
Please see the the pictures which show how the man used two soft woods rubbed together, and within 30 seconds, produced fire. We all had a go, which was a laugh, but we needed some Swan Vesta to get the fire going….
Some of the Masai tribeswomen gathered outside and sang us a welcome song. I think they were as intrigued at us, as we were in them.
Benson explained about prearranged marriages and how both girls and boys are still circumcised to make them men and women. We had heard that the Kenyan Government had been trying to stop the young women being circumcised and had brought in a new law to stop this below the age of 17. The Masai still have their own law though.
We visited the Masai market — well it was just us and most of the Masai village trying to sell us their products — bracelets, hand carves figures etc. We felt somewhat obliged to buy some items and it was quite amusing when the chief negotiator for the village stepped forward and asked for a ridiculous amount of money. Most amusing was us trying to negotiate as a family — talk about showing your hand in a poker game — Thomas saying “go on Dad pay him” and George offering way above what we should have. We left the village with two red Masai blankets, a stone baby Hippo figure and two copper bracelets — all at John Lewis prices!!!.
We enjoyed our visit and once again it offered an ultimate contrast to our western lifestyle — the Masai have a culture based on all for one with everything shared, clear rules with a leader who decides on any conflicts and decisions. They didn’t seem to have any pressure and …”
